September 14 Worship: "Genesis - First Things"

On Sunday, we completed the first week of Godsway 66 with the sermon on Genesis.  Focusing on the covenant between God and Abraham (and through Abraham, with all of humankind), we considered that the first lesson of the Bible is that God wants to be in relationship with the created world, particularly the humans who are made in God's image (per Genesis 1).

If you missed Sunday's sermon, if you'd like to listen to it again, or if you'd like to share it with others, you can find an audio recording here.

You can also listen to Sunday's communion meditation and the closing benediction.

With all that is in Genesis, how did you narrow it down to one message? I'm not necessarily arguing with your choice, but why this story about Abraham? It seems like picking one thing to preach from multilayered books will be a challenge for this series.

No question that it's a challenge to pick one passage to focus on in each book. But it offers the opportunity to suggest a synthesis for each book, which has been an interesting process for Genesis and Exodus.

I think that the notion of covenant, which I redefined as God's consistent wish to be in relationship with human beings, is a central theme of Genesis. Is it the only one? No, of course not.
